Yesterday I visited the MV Chicago. The ship arrived again after a 60 day voyage from the Far East. I know most of the seafarers and I received a warm welcome.
The new cook especially was happy to see me. He said; " Don't you recognize me? " I said; " Kind off! " ( I meet so many seafarers I am not always sure if I have met them before. )
But then he opened one of his cook books and pulled from it a picture. On it was the cook and the chaplain! The picture was taken on the MV Jamaica in 2004! At that time he was a steward but is now chief cook. He carries this picture with him wherever he goes!
During the nine years we both have changed a bit; a little heavier and we have aged, of course.
After the picture showing and picture taking I had to look at a large number of ( baby ) pictures on his " I phone ".
He now is married, they have a beautiful two year old girl and live in Constanza, Romania.
Nine years and so much has changed in technology. I ' remember ' that I took that picture with a camera that came with a film roll! He now showed me close to a hundred pictures of his wife and child on his
" I phone "!
It's heart warming to know that many seafarers we meet do not forget us - who carry a picture of the chaplain - even after nine years!
