Christmas at Sea 2012

The Christmas season is behind us with February 2013 just around the corner and I wonder how many people still think about the, "most momentous event in the history of our Western Civilization'.  According to the author, Malcolm Muggeridge, " In the exposition and portrayal of it, (Christmas) literally billions of words, oceans of paint, acres of canvas, mountains of stone and marble, have been expended, not to mention, in recent times, miles of film. ....Is there, then, anything left to say?" *

During the Christmas season I read a story of a London/England teenager which really shocked me.  For the first time in his life he went to church during the Christmas season. He heard about the birth of Jesus Christ and really liked what he heard. After the service he went to the teacher to commend her for the wonderful story but he had one question for her, one thing he didn't  understand; " Why did Mary and Joseph give their baby boy a swear word/name - JESUS!...................Welcome to the world of Post Christendom!

In this ' Post Christendom ' world we, again, delivered more than 2000 Christmas presents to the seafarers that came to the Port of Vancouver.  During the last three years we have also been bringing presents to the ships that are anchored in English Bay.  This year we were joined by the press as we traveled to the ships on board the water taxi.   Interviews were held and an endless amount of pictures were taken etc., etc.

Again, it was a wonderful experience and we made many seafarers very happy. We thank all the churches and individuals who donated presents, money and time to make it all happen again.  Meanwhile, I kept thinking about that great momentous event of God coming down in the form of a helpless child...........God's great surprise.......Oh, how he moves in mysterious ways His wonders to perform...........And then to think that the season of Lent is upon us very soon!                      * 'Jesus Rediscovered' p.6,  M.
