We all agree that we live in a world that changes fast, too fast especially when it comes to social media and communication. When I began my chaplaincy in 2003 there was only one dial-up computer in the Mission building at Roberts Bank. How times have changed! Now three routers can barely service the seafarers who visit armed with their laptops. Whether we like it or not technology has changed the world forever - also for seafarers. On any given night there'll be twenty to thirty seafarers, sitting behind their laptops and it is completely quiet in the building.
Recently, I read an article in 'Nautilus' (an international shipping magazine) that suggested Ports should provide free wi-fi internet services for seafarers on visiting ships. There are many good reasons for doing this as today's seafarers find little time in port. Small crews and short turnaround times make it difficult for seafarers to visit a seafarer's center. Good and inexpensive communications are vital to them, particularly wireless internet access and mobile phone, so that they can keep in touch with their families.
How the ' world ' has changed and what change will lay ahead for all of us in terms of technology. We have to wait and see what will happen, but it would be a real pity when seafarer centers have to close because crew members will stay on board all because of free internet!
