Recently I read an article about ships lost at sea. In 2012 the shipping losses worldwide were 106 ships. The cruise ship Costa Concordia with a loss of thirty lives that sank off the coast of and a ferry, the Rabaul Queen which sank off the coast of Papua New-Guinea with the loss of 321 lives had most fatalities.
Most ships were lost due to human failure! The Rabaul Queen had double the max. capacity of passengers when it capsized in a major storm and we know what happened that fateful day on board the Costa Carnival - a captain who ignored all the warning signs because he wanted to show a ( female ) passenger a small island off the western coast of Italy
One note of interest; Exactly a hundred years ago an other passenger ship sank; The Titanic. Since the sinking of the ship that ' Even God could't sink ' much has changed in shipping.
Unlike the Titanic, the Costa Concordia had excellent communications equipment, high standards of training and a wide rage of navigation supporting technology on board.
And now the ship is a constructive ' total loss ' with a reported insurance recoverable of 515 million dollars!
Two months ago the bulk carrier Cape Apricot, equipped with modern navigation tools and an experienced pilot on board caused major damage at the Westshore Terminal because of human failure.
In Acts 27 we read the detailed story of Paul's journey to Rome as a prisoner. They got ship wrecked also because of human failure - owner and captain refused to listen to Paul's warning.
Whether it's the Costa Concordia, Titanic, Cape Capriot, Rabaul Queeen, or even a BC ferry that sank off the BC coast , it all begins to sound so repetitive - sinking and damage due to human failure!
The same apostle who was ship wrecked three times, in his letter to the Romans, writes about the problem of human failure ( sin ) but also about it's remedy to be delivered from - forever - Jesus Christ! The cross, the shedding of His blood - once and for all - the empty tomb - eternal life!
